The Oxfordshire Rising of 1596 was centred on the villages just to the north of Oxford city, although support had been canvassed over a much wider area. Yarnton, Water Eaton, Hampton Gay and Bletchingdon, in particular, were home to large manor houses and enclosing landlords.
There is a fine circular walk of about four miles taking in the centre of this area and some of the places shown on this website. The walk goes from Thrupp along the river to Hampton Poyle and back via Hampton Gay and Shipton-on-Cherwell, but it can as easily be started in Kidlington or Hampton Poyle. Thrupp has a tearoom and a pub and there is also a pub restaurant in Hampton Poyle. Willowbrook Farm, just before Hampton Gay, is an organic smallholding that has a cafe and various farm-related activities on summer weekends. For more, see their website.
